What you need to know about picking rugs for open concept areas

Every project starts from the ground up, literally.  So what do you do when you have multiple spaces that can all be seen at the same time?  Most common example is the living room - dining room - kitchen open concept space.  Others could be entryway - living or master bed - master bath.  This can be a little tricky but I’ve put together these tips to make sure your spaces will flow perfectly together.

  1. A cohesive color palette is equally important to scale and pattern.  I like to start with my statement (or favorite) rug.  The one that I know I want to use or the one that has the highest amount of color variations.  I pull out the most commonly used colors in the statement rug and use them as my guide to pick the others.  This makes the color story for all of the adjoining areas cohesive, flowing from one space to another.

  2. pattern play:  Pick opposite patterns.  If you are going to pick a high patterned rug in one area make the other a simple pattern.  Example:  a floral rug in one area & a striped rug in another.  Choose patterns that do not want to compete with one another.

  3. Scale plays an important part in pattern play as well.  If you have a large floral pattern you can get away with a small scale floral next to it.  Same for all other patterns and shapes.  Opposite scaled patterns will flow nicely when paired together.

  1. When in doubt bring in a solid textured rug.  This 100% of the time will pair.  Jute, fur, or heavy piled shag in a solid color pulled from another rug in your collections is an easy go to option.

I’ve put together examples of open concept rug pairings to help guide you or take the guess work out all together.

I am a wife, mom of 4 kids (+ a daughter in-law & soon to be grand baby), lost count of how many dogs, home builder & designer for over 20 years, retail store owner, DIY fanatic that uses power tools & hot glue guns, love to learn about gardening, cooks things that are easy, & an expert in playing it cool during chaos. I’ve learned a trick or two in everything that I’ve done and I’m here to share those with you.

I created this space because I deeply believe that the home you create matters. It can be a place of beautiful refuge. A place of love and acceptance. A place that fuels and inspires you. It doesn’t have to be impossible or overwhelming.

I want to encourage you that you can do this and I can help!
