Rug Guide 101

One of my favorite ways to update a space is a new rug! It has the ability to set the color palette for the entire, creates definition to the space, and adds warmth through texture. I have compiled a few tips to help ensure that you are finding the right size for your space.

1. Measure before you start

Before you start looking at rugs you need to measure the dimensions of your room to work out the approximate space you have for a rug. Don’t forget about doorways and walkways. If a door is nearby open the door to see what kind of clearance you have.

2. Bigger is 99% of the time better

A small rug can make a room look small. I like to have a rug large enough in the space that most of the main furniture can touch the rug, this creates an illusion that the space is larger than it is and ties everything together.

**Pro Tip: A good rule is to leave 18” around the edge of the room of bare floor.

4. All front legs

I like to have at least the front legs of all seating on the outside edges of the rug. I like to think of the rug as the holding place to all the furniture so each piece needs to have at least the front 2 legs on it. Same rule applies to dining spaces. Larger is still better in the dining if the room will allow for it to save the dining chair from fighting with the edge of the rug.

I am a wife, mom of 4 kids (+ a daughter in-law & soon to be grand baby), lost count of how many dogs, home builder & designer for over 20 years, retail store owner, DIY fanatic that uses power tools & hot glue guns, love to learn about gardening, cooks things that are easy, & an expert in playing it cool during chaos. I’ve learned a trick or two in everything that I’ve done and I’m here to share those with you.

I created this space because I deeply believe that the home you create matters. It can be a place of beautiful refuge. A place of love and acceptance. A place that fuels and inspires you. It doesn’t have to be impossible or overwhelming.

I want to encourage you that you can do this and I can help!
